The Features and What to Look For in a Barcode Scanner

Barcode scanners can be used to scan barcodes. These devices can be used as hand-held or stationary devices and can be connected with computers using compatible ports. A barcode scanner includes both a code reader as well as a decoder. Both are necessary for the presentation of stored information.

Barcode scanners were inexpensive, simple and easy to use. They had a fixed light and a sensor. They are markedly different from these because they include polygonal mirrors as well as laser scanning technology. Laser scanners can read barcodes from all angles and are extremely fast.

There are many types of barcodes available: hand-held, handheld, hands-free, rugged and wearable. Pen-wand scanners are the simplest and most portable. Pen-wand scanners have one limitation: they must be in direct contact with the barcode. They also need to be placed at a certain angle to read the barcode. Digital cameras are now capable of capturing single- and double-dimensional barcodes.

There are many types of barcode scanners:

LED scanner. These scanners are also known as CCD scanners, with the CCD representing the photo-imaging sensor and not the light source.

Laser Scanner – These scanners have a longer scanning range and are more expensive.

Imager Scanning: These scanners can take an image from the barcode. They are ruggeder and don’t have any moving parts.

2D Imager Scanning: These scanners have the technology to take 2D pictures of the barcodes and scan 2D barcodes such as Datamatrix. They can also scan linear barcodes that are sometimes found;

Handheld scanners: These scanners can be carried around with a handle and a trigger to turn on the light source.

Pen or wand scanner: To read the barcode, this type of scanner must be swiped across it.

Stationary scanner: They can be mounted on the wall or placed on a table. The scanner scans a barcode which is passed underneath or beside it. These scanners are used most often in supermarkets and retail shops to speed up the scanning process.

Fixed position scanner:This camscanner reader is for industrial purposes. These barcodes can be used to generate a unique identification during manufacturing or for logistical purposes. These codes are often used on boxes and packed cartons, as well as pallets that still need to go through certain processes before reaching another destination.

PDA scanner: These PDAs come with an integrated barcode reader.

Mobile barcode scanners These barcode scanners are the most recent technological innovation. They use color codes and a two-dimensional code format called “mCode”, which allows for scanning barcodes from various types.

You can find general-purpose barcode scanners at hospitals and checkout counters. These scanners can also scan identification documents.

For scanning barcodes in harsh environments, rugged scanners can be useful. All barcode scanners can be used to identify and label barcodes and speed up data processing. However, the most popular are the laser scanners and the camera scanners.
